On December 12 a meeting of the Academic Council of the Institute, dedicated to the 25th anniversary of the deep-sea manned submersible "Mir" took place at the big conference hall of the Institute of Oceanology by P.P. Shirshov of the Russian Academy of Sciences.

A working seminar on improving the effectiveness of international cooperation at Lake Baikal took place at the International Center for Education of the Moscow State University in Geneva on the initiative of the MSU Faculty of Geography, the Russian Geographical Society and the Fund for Protection of Lake Baikal. The seminar was aimed at discussing the results of the numerous European organizations working in the various areas relating to the issues of sustainable development of the Baikal natural territory, in particular the nature of the environmental system “Selenga-Baikal”.

On 12-14 October the 7th All-Russian Festival of Science took place in Moscow. The Festival goals are to explain the society in clear and simple language what scientists do, how scientific research improves the quality of life, what prospects it opens to a contemporary person. The Festival of Science aims at introducing visitors to the successes of science - both global and domestic. That is why, in particular, the Festival of Science in Russia chose this year the motto – “Touch science!”.

On September 24, 2012 an international scientific seminar for preparation of the expeditionary project for the nature research of Lake Leman (Switzerland) and Lake Baikal (Russia), organized by the Fund for Protection of Lake Baikal and the Research Foundation of Lake Leman (eLEMO) took place in Moscow.

The Republic of Buryatia has presented the conception of tourism development in the region
The presentation has taken place within the frames of the VI Baikal economic forum.
According to the developed project, 22 hotels of different levels of service will appear in the republic till 2020, the total number of rooms in them will amount to 2000. It is already known that the first five hotels have to appear in the period from 2011- till 2013, - the Press office of the Baikal Economic Forum informs.

Russian Mir mini-subs dive in Lake Baikal
Russia's Mir deep submersibles made a series of dives in the world's deepest freshwater lake to inspect crystals containing natural gas on Wednesday, the Fund for the Protection of Lake Baikal said. The dives took place near Olkhon Island, the largest island in East Siberia's Lake Baikal.

Baikal pretends to the second place in the Internet-voting for detection of a miracle of the Siberian federal district. In accord with the results of the 9th of January 18,4 thousand people voted for Baikal, it falls behind mountain Belukha which was given 21,6 thousand voices more than 5 thousand. On the 3th place is the natural reserve Stolbyi, which was supported by 9,7 thousand people. As for the Novosibirsk zoo it has lowered one line and how occupies the fourth place with 8,6 thousand voices.

SPECIAL ECONOMIC ZONE OF TOURISM AND RECREATION (SEZ) AT LAKE BAIKAL
In December 2006 the Republic of Buryatia became one of the competition winners and got the right to organize a special economic zone of tourism and recreation (SEZ). The final results of the competition were summed up on December 6 in Moscow at the sitting of the selection commission. Besides Buryatia, the territories to organize such zones are the Irkutsk region, the Krasnodar and Stavropol territories, the Kaliningrad region, the Republic of Altai and the Altai territory.
It is a historic event for the republic which will allow it to start a new stage of its economic development.
The tourism and recreation zone at Lake Baikal in Buryatia will take up the territory of 700 sq. km 150-180 km away from Ulan Ude.
The Baikal Is a Gem of the World
The round table Lake Baikal Is a Gem of the World devoted to the 10th anniversary of Lake Baikal being included in the UNESCO list of the World Heritage Sites, took place on December 14, 2006 in the Republic of Buryatia National Library. It was organized by the Republic of Buryatia Ministry of Culture and Mass Communications, the Republic of Buryatia National Library and the UNESCO International Chair of ecological ethics at East Siberian State Technological University.
Representatives of the organizations and institutions of Buryatia connected in this or that way with nature and Lake Baikal protection took part in the work of the round table: the power bodies educational and research institutions, social non-government organizations and culture institutions. The participants listened to the reports delivered by representatives of the Republic of Buryatia Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment Protection, the Republic of Buryatia Ministry of Economic Development and Foreign Affairs, the Federal Administration of nature protection activity at Lake Baikal – “Baikalpriroda” of the Russian Federation Ministry of Natural Resources, Sustainable Development Institute of East Siberian State Technological University, Baikal Institute of Nature Usage of the Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences, the Buryatia Regional Lake Baikal Association, FIRN Club, “Gran” (Facet) Baikal Information Centre and the “Great Baikal Trail” project.
