Man becomes better
in close communication with nature.
Nature captivates man with its fascination
and keeps clarity, integrity and delicacy of the soul.
In the middle of nature man breathes easier,
thinks broader, feels deeper and loves clearer.
Ecological education has always been in the centre of attention of our library. We have got a certain experience of this kind.
In recent years there have been a tendency of forming the population’s conscience. The community is aware that ecological problems are a global problem of mankind.
The 20th century brought a lot of problems to mankind, among them social diseases (AIDS, drugs addiction, alcoholism). The situation in our region can’t leave any normal person indifferent. Some traits which had always been integral in Russia, such as charity, duty, honour and conscience, started being lost among teenagers and young people under the influence of different factors.
Moral and spiritual improvement of Russia is urgent now. Solving these problems depends on ecological thinking of all the people. That’s why it should be an essential part of the 21st century social ideology. But ecological thinking and attitude towards the environment cannot be formed spontaneously.
The readers’ demands reflect all the changes in life, that’s why they have become more serious and purposeful. A great role is played by libraries in solving this important problem.
The Tarbagatai district library has got unique opportunities to give the population access to information resources and plays the priority role in working out ecological conscience.
For many years the district library has been working according to ecological guidelines “Ecology. Man. Society”. Nowadays it is a well formed and developed system.
In the childhood the basics of everything which will accompany a person throughout his or her life are laid: love for the native land, love for the neighbour, love for nature. Being a real citizen of one’s motherland depends on the foundation knowledge.
That’s why we have chosen the gradual work to form ecological thinking from elementary school to advanced knowledge of ecological problems which worry contemporary schoolchildren and young people.
The library uses different forms of its work. In the reading hall there is a thematic complex “In Harmony with Nature, in Peace with People”.
There are 1,712 books on ecology in the library, 6,608 are given out. There are sections on ecology of Buryatia, ecological nature usage, ecological security, ecology of man, protection of animals and plants, secrets and mysteries encyclopedia, new publications.
Thematic files are being expanded: “To See the World Harmony”, “The Ecology of Russia Problems ”, “Learn to See the Mysteries of the Universe with the Eyes of Your Heart”. Card indices on ecology and ecological law are worked out.
There is a card index of newspaper and magazine articles “Ecopress” in the library. The library is subscribed to ecological magazines, such as “Ecology and Life”, “Ecology of Man” and “The Light”.
In 1998 a youth ecological club “The Clean World” was organized initiated by N.V. Khlebodarova, the head of service section. In out opinion, the club is the most efficient form of ecological education and organizing young people’s leisure.
There are customary active members in the club, the main body of it. Our motto is:
Not a single step backwards,
Not a single step on the spot,
But only forwards
And only together.
The objective is to make up a consolidating centre and give teenagers access to ecological culture.
The club activity was directed to ecological education of schoolchildren and the students of professional school # 36. Mostly biology teachers were involved in the work. The club organized ecological activities devoted to nature festivals, studying and improvement of the environment. The club activity solved many teaching and developing tasks: understanding the value of the surrounding world; realizing oneself as a part of it; man’s health depending on the nature condition, emotionally positive attitude towards nature, forming the active life position and ecologically correct behaviour in everyday life and outside. In some time the youth ecological club “The Clean World” got serious support from the specialists of the district and village administrations and the youth affairs committee. Doctors, school and professional school teachers and mass media journalists cooperate with the club.
The Tarbagatai district library is a great information centre. A number of grants were received by the library, supported by the Soros Fund and the Republic of Buryatia Ministry of Culture.
The club leaders acquired a good possibility to make the younger generation closer to information. It is possible to use the database, to get information for self-education. The main thing is that the young people became interested in the environment preservation.
Information centre together with the members of “The Clear World” club spreads information on the condition of the environment, it organizes nature protection activities.
The compiled “Ecology” database contains the following sections: Local Study. The Baikal Region Ecology. The Tarbagatai District Ecology. Man Ecology. Documents, Photo Documents – Printed Matter.
The sections contain information on ecological foundations, organizations and institutions in charge of ecological education, information on ecological situation in the district, republic and the world.
The centre also publishes such printed matter as booklets, leaflets, thematic lists, bookmarks etc.
In 2003 “The Clear World” club headed by S.I. Chebunina and Yu.Yu. Sokolova together with the youth affairs committee represented by A.S. Chebunin and the district clinic represented by T.N. Klimovich worked out and made a sociological research to promote ecological education.
The secondary and professional schools students took part in the poll. The ages were 14-20: 14-16 – 28.1%; 16-18 – 34.2%; 18-20 – 34.2%. 83% of the poll participants are members of different ecological clubs. The question “Would you like to be a member of a youth ecological organization?” was answered in the positive by 48.2%; 28% answered in the negative, and 23.8% are not sure. 87% of all the poll participants would like to improve their ecological education; 13% do not want it. The question “What is your opinion of the place of a library in ecological education of young people?” was answered as follows: 34.2% - the leading place; 32.5% - insignificant place; 33.3% - ordinary place.
The question “Do you think that ecology problems are urgent nowadays?” was answered by 89.9% in the positive; 10.1% do not think them to be important.
The question “What does the Red Book mean for you?” was answered as follows: 38.8% said that they had never used it; 56% know about it and read it; 5.3% have never seen it.
The question “What do you think of the fact that ecology and man’s health are inseparable?” was answered with quite lengthy statements; 98% agree; 2% doubt it.
The question “Which activities do you think would reflect most deeply the environment condition and its unfavourable impact on man?” was responded by 48% for video lecturing activity; 28.7% for round tables; 15% for training activities; 10% for shows; 3.7% abstentions.
The question “How would you like to take part in nature protection?” was responded by 32.7% for protecting, cleaning forests or rivers and convincing others to do the same; 54% for hikes, rallies, excursions; 13.3% are for taking part in all the ecological activities.
The poll analysis showed that the ecological activities had been inefficient very often because of lack of coordination. We made a conclusion that we should look for more efficient forms of ecological education.
Together with all the people and organizations concerned, “The Clear World” club has worked out an ecological education programme “Interrelation of Man and Environment” which presupposes combination of both traditional education methods and up-to-date methods. The programme presupposes ecological education to be of the complex structure, i.e. embrace all the spheres and needs participation of education, medicine and culture specialists.
